This shortage can sneak up on you, making you feel cranky, weak, or worn-out, and it can mess with your focus too. Iron plays a big role in keeping your body ticking smoothly, like making hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in your blood and helps keep your cells, skin, hair, and nails healthy.
Lots of folks can end up low on iron: pregnant women, those with heavy periods, folks with tummy troubles, or those who don't eat enough iron-rich foods. Signs that you might need more iron include pale skin and nails, feeling weak, tired, or low on energy, struggling to catch your breath, and getting headaches, among other things.
Dr. Aditya S Chowti, a top doc at Fortis Hospital in Bengaluru, stresses how important it is to spot these signs early. "Iron deficiency is a big issue worldwide, and catching it early can help prevent bigger health problems down the road," he says.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF IRON DEFICIENCY
Feeling Tired:
One major sign of low iron is feeling tired and weak all the time, even after resting enough. That's because your blood might not have enough hemoglobin to carry oxygen around like it should.
Pale Skin and Nails:
Another big clue is having pale skin and nails. If your face, lips, and nail beds look less rosy than usual, it could mean your blood isn't carrying enough oxygen to your tissues and organs.
Shortness of Breath:
Feeling breathless, especially when you're active or doing something strenuous, can also be a sign of low iron. When your blood doesn't have enough iron, it can't carry oxygen well, leaving you gasping for air.
Headaches:
Headaches and feeling dizzy are common with low iron too. Not having enough iron can mess with how your blood vessels work and how much oxygen gets to your brain, causing headaches and dizziness, especially when you stand up fast.
Cold Hands and Feet:
Having icy hands and feet, even in warm weather, might be a sign of low iron too. When your blood doesn't have enough oxygen because of low iron, your circulation can suffer, leaving your extremities feeling chilly.
Dry Hair and Brittle Nails:
Dry, brittle hair and nails that break easily can also point to low iron levels. Not having enough iron can weaken your hair and nails, making them prone to damage and breakage.
Restless Legs:
Feeling a constant need to move your legs, especially at night, could be a sign of low iron. This restless legs syndrome can mess with your sleep and overall well-being.
Trouble Concentrating:
Struggling to concentrate or remember things might be due to low iron levels too. Not having enough iron can affect your brain function, making it hard to stay focused.
Cravings for Non-Food Items:
Low iron can even make you crave weird stuff like chalk or soap. This condition, called pica, can also make you more likely to get sick because iron helps keep your immune system strong.
Spotting these signs early can help you get treatment for low iron and keep you feeling your best. So, it's essential to make sure you're getting enough iron for good health and happiness.
